Dogs rescued from hoarder need medical help

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Assessments of the 28 dogs rescued from a hoarding situation over the weekend revealed that they could potentially need up to $ 10,000 for medical care.

“They are all settling in and letting us handle them, whereas the first day, they were scared,” said Kris Meidinger, dog manager with the James River Humane Society. “They were terrified. They’re doing a lot better today.”

  • May 30, 2013: A drug-sniffing police dog is shown at a training session at a police station in Bremerton, Wash.AP

Police in Washington state and Colorado are trying to teach old dogs to unlearn an old trick.

For as long as dogs have been trained to assist police officers, they’ve been helping make drug busts. But now that the recreational use of marijuana is legal in those two states, officers are in a K-9 quandary.

“We’ll have to look for other indicators,” said Bob Calkins of the Washington State Patrol. “We’ll have to develop cases other ways.”

OCD Dogs and Humans Share Same Brain Abnormalities

Dog Looking at and Listening to a Phonograph, ...

Dogs with obsessive compulsive disorder show nearly the same brain abnormalities of humans who have OCD, a new study finds.

The discovery, published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry, adds another notch to the dog-human connection and holds promise for better treatments for OCD.

“While the study sample was small and further research is needed, the results further validate that dogs with CCD (Canine Compulsive Disorder) can provide insight and understanding into anxiety disorders that affect people,” Nicholas Dodman, a professor of clinical sciences at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University who worked on the study, said in a press release.

Agricultural Dogs Sniff Out Illegal Produce

There was a time when Hawkeye the dog stood amidst the most humblest of life’s predicaments.

“Hawkeye finds a lot of things there’s no way we would’ve been able to find,” said Tino Menchaca, Hawkeye’s handler with the Santa Clara Agricultural Department.

Dogs and Humans Evolved Together, Study Suggests

Dogs and Humans Evolved Together, Study Suggests

Dogs are more than man’s best friend: They may be partners in humans’ evolutionary journey, according to a new study.

The study shows that dogs split from gray wolves about 32,000 years ago, and that since then, domestic dogs‘ brains and digestive organs have evolved in ways very similar to the brains and organs of humans.

The findings suggest a more ancient origin for dog domestication than previously suggested. They also hint that a common environment drove both dog and human evolution for thousands of years.
