Getting ready to discover to train a puppy needs you to be organized and take copious amounts of notes. I know that sounds very “fuzzy” and lacking substance – don’t glaze over and ignore it, as it’s a very useful record of what has worked, and shows you exactly what your dog responds to. Making a plan should really be the first thing you do when you start train a puppy, as it will make a big difference when making a puppy’s or adult dog’s transition from his happy and playful home to his new and unrecognizable surroundings. A young pup can suffer separation anxiety when his mother and littermates suddenly disappear, and then is suddenly moved to strange and confusing habitat where there is nothing but unfamiliar people and strange smells.

And it’s not just puppies and young dogs. Adult dogs can also experience separation anxiety by all the changes that seem to be taking place in their lives. Regardless of their age, your new dog has no idea what awaits in his future; all he’ll see in his new home will be strange surroundings and no familiar faces.

If it is at all do-able, an ideal plan would be to visit your puppy or dog at his current home. This way you are not a complete stranger to him when you pick him up. When you start out, tips for training a puppy he will already be used to you and better able to learn his new skills. I appreciate this is not always possible so, perhaps you will be able to take something from the dog’s former home with you – like maybe a piece of clothing that he’s slept on, or any other item he recognizes that will help him settle down and survive the feeling of having nothing familiar in his life.

The best time to bring a new puppy or dog into your home is at a time when you’re going to be at home for a few days to help him settle in and get to know you. During the holidays is ideal – providing of course you’re at home and not on vacation. Don’t bring a new dog home and then pack him off to a boarding kennel while you take a three-week cruise. You need to have at least a couple of days at home and help the newcomer get over his homesickness blues.

Just as parents prepare for the arrival of a new baby where we buy all the things we’ll need for the babies needs, training your puppy needs to be given the attention to detail. As a new dog carer, you need to prepare your home in just the same way. After all, your new puppy is a new member of the family.

Section off a specific area for your new pup when he moves in. This will help him settle in, and will help when you start house training your puppy as well because any accidents are easier to clean off hard floors. Normally, the kitchen makes a great new home due to the high traffic and background noise, which helps prevent your new dog from getting lonely.

Don’t forget that a young puppy is accustomed to the companionship of his littermates. Loneliness could set in since leaving his littermates behind so your new job is to become his new playmate. At the same time, you can’t let him get away with murder for a couple of days, then try to train him out of those habits once your training routine begins. Puppy housebreaking realistically starts the same day that he becomes a member of your family.

Being permissive in this respect is not being kind, as it will confuse him when he finally does start. Everything you apply to training a puppy are equally effective when working with older dogs, in pretty much the same way. Young puppies are not the only ones that may suffer from loneliness. All dogs entering a new living arrangement will need discipline, patience, and comfort. But it will be a very rewarding experience for both of you.
