Dog: Stop Aggressive Dog Behavior
By Sandra Scott
Aggression is instinctive for dogs and everyone knows that dogs can seriously wound humans and other animals. Thankfully, there are ways for dog owners to stop aggression in their dog. It is essential that dog owners who have an aggressive dog make sure that he is given obedience training, before he harms you or a member of your family.
Here’s a fantastic guide for training aggressive dogs that you should take a look at: Training Aggressive Dogs.
An aggressive dog will most often be aggressive towards strangers or family members. These two types of aggressive dog behavior happen for a variety of reasons so must be treated differently.
Aggression Towards Strangers
The most common reason for a dog taking a dislike to a person or another animal is that he hasn’t had a chance to get used to them. The process for getting your dog used to unfamiliar people, animals, and surroundings is called socialization. It’s impossible to overemphasize the importance of socialization in your dog’s training. You may be wondering how socialization can stop aggressive dogs from attacking the postman or pizza delivery boy. A dog that has been socialized will start to realize that these new adventures can be amusing instead of being frightening.
Your dog should learn this important lesson as a puppy. The more frequently your dog gets to interact with different people (for example children, teenagers, men wearing uniforms, old people, people wearing helmets or carrying umbrellas) in peaceful and enjoyable surroundings, the safer your dog will be around strangers.

Puppy group training courses (often run by pet stores or at a vet office) are an excellent place to socialize your dog in a monitored environment. Your puppy will learn how to relate to strange dogs. He will also realize that he need not fear the strangers at these sessions. Make sure you don’t overwhelm him – begin slowly to allow his tolerance to grow over time.
Aggressive Dog Behavior Towards Family Members
The most usual reasons why dogs show aggression to their human family are:
- Your dog is trying to safeguard his possessions (food, toys, etc.) from an apparent danger (that is to say you or your family members). Resource guarding is quite normal behavior for dogs.
- As dogs are pack animals, it boils down to dominance and your dog’s sense of his ranking in the hierarchy of the household. Dogs perceive the family make up as being no different from a dog pack. A dog that sees himself in a loftier position than his owner will be aggressive.
Resource guarding is clearly an act of dominance – a lower ranked dog would never show aggression towards to a higher ranked member of the pack.
The best way to prevent aggressive dog behavior is to provide consistent dog obedience training, which will make it clear to your dog that you are the “alpha dog”. Your “alpha dog” status can be reinforced with rewards such as treats and praise when he responds appropriately to a command, and with “time-out” for misbehaving.
