Dog: Puppy Barking is the Way a Puppy Communicates
Puppy barking is totally normal for dogs. Be prepared for puppy barking, whining and howling when you bring them home as it is what they do! If you are one devoted dog owner, you’ll know you will experience barking, whining and howling at any time. There is no way to train your puppy to stop barking completely and you would not want him to anyway. However, it is really ideal for you, your neighbors, as well as your dog, if barking fits can be placed under control.
Why Barking Starts
Dogs who are confined or alone a lot without exercise store up energy and need an outlet for it. A dog who is alone all day is more likely to take up barking as a hobby because there is nobody to control him and make him stop. Pretty soon, barking will become an enjoyable habit for him or her. Many dogs, once they start barking, do it because they think it’s fun and enjoyable.
It may actually be your fault that your dog barks so much. You obey your dog when he speaks. When the dog barks, you let him out. When he barks again, you let him back in. A puppy quickly learns that barking earns him a snack; they bark and they get rewarded. Puppy barking gets your attention and so they easily fall into this trap because the very nature of it gets your attention and they get what they want. You need to reward your dog when they are not doing any barking.
Puppy Barking and Exercises
If you want to reduce the amount your puppy barks and give yourself, your household, and your neighbors a little peace, it is important that you understand why your puppy barks. Usually a puppy will bark because it is afraid, bored, lonely, or frustrated. Behavioral problems are usually alleviated when you are spending more time with your new puppy. A well-exercised, happy, and contented puppy is more likely to spend the whole day sleeping when you are not home. So take some time and play with him, train him and exercise him.
Puppy obedience training is as tiresome a mental exercise for dogs as it is for humans. Most puppies and dogs enjoy, wild rapid paced and exciting games such as “come here,” “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” but you can make it more rewarding by saying come here for a hug, a massage and other praise and treats. Your puppy will take to training better if he is not bored.
For dogs living in the backyard for the majority of the time, they probably need some “social” exercises. Puppy barking will lessen if you walk them around your neighborhood. On a daily walk they get to explore the outside things they see and smell while they are at home. Pet dogs and puppies may dash madly around your backyard but this is not a form of puppy exercise. Your dog is pacing and fidgeting in the same way you would when nervous. Be sure your dog or puppy has something to do to keep busy. Puppies love to have chew toys for puppy biting, and big dogs enjoy a digging pit.
Canines are social animals. They are just like us. They need companions and friends. Your dog needs to be taken for walks and exercised every day or every week as well as to let them socialize with other dogs. If they engage in dog training, playing, and romping all day, they will be exhausted. Then they will have no trouble sleeping well and rejuvenating after a good day of play and exercise.

I don’t think the exercise point can be emphasized enough. The behavior of my three dogs is so different if they go more than a day without serious activity.
But you also must address exercise in the context of the breed you are dealing with. For me it gets interesting because I have two chihuahuas and a Italian greyhound/jack russell terrier mix. It doesn’t take much for the little dogs to get worn out but my grey/jack russell is a different story – it takes SO much more.
