Dog: How to Train a Beagle – Different Approaches

Thursday 2nd of September 2010

A popular dog breed for a family pet is a Beagle as they are bright, keen to please their owners and have a very affectionate nature. Beagles are medium sized and this is a consideration when choosing a family pet. Beagles have a well developed sense of smell which is why they were originally bred for hunting small animals such as rabbits and hares. It can be a challenge to train a hound as well as a very rewarding experience. Stubborness is common in Beagles and you will have to make training interesting and fun to prevent your dog from being uncooperative or becoming distracted by something else . Beagles are a good choice especially if you have a young family. Their placid nature and robust character means a large capacity for tolerance of noise and activity. Like most dogs, Beagles are happiest when with their family and don’t enjoy spending large amounts of time by themselves. You could consider buying two for company.

Here are some training options for you to consider. Chose the option that is most appropriate for your lifestyle and schedule when considering the Beagle training tips below. Learn more about Beagle Obedience Training at DogHelpdesk.com.

Training your Beagle yourself

Training techniques and materials are readily available for interested dog owners who prefer to train their dog without attenting a class. You will be able to source material written and developed by trainers with experience and a good reputation. The decision to train your dog yourself has the advantage of flexibility around your other responsibilities. If you decide to train alone you may not expose your dog to a range of other distractions like other dogs, people and smells. Important experiences for a well adjusted dog. Puppy pre-school classes are a good idea

As Beagles are driven by their keen sense of smell, it is a good idea to spend  some time training in a place where there are many distractions. Keeping your Beagle interested when there are new patches of grass to smell and other dogs to sniff, will be challenging. If not, you could have your dog with its nose to the ground for the entire training session! Beagles can be stubborn and won’t bend too easily if they find something more interesting to do. Again, you will need to be determined and consistent with your instruction. The more fun you make training, the more your Beagle will want to participate and it will easily learn from your commands. Training a Beagle is very gratifying.
