Dog: Bark Control Collar FAQ

Thursday 2nd of September 2010

A bark control collar can be used as a harmless and efficient training tool for eliminating your dog’s annoying or persistent barking. Following are the most often asked points I’m asked to clarify from pet owners interested in understanding how bark collars work.

Bark Collars – Harmless or Harmful?

There has been much controversy about whether bark collars are a humane training device. In my opinion, anti bark collars are definitely humane.

There are many different kinds of bark collars (Aboistop and Citronella collars, Ultrasonic Devices and Static Correction Bark Collars). For the intention of this post, I’ll center on static correction since the majority of controversy about safety and humaneness seems to center on this type of collar.

Shock correction bark collars use a harmless static shock to admonish your dog when she begins barking. Some collars detect your dog’s bark through use of vibration sensor, some bark collars utilize a microphone to identify barking from sound; many collars use a combination of both sound and vibration.

The static correction that your dog receives is exactly like the shock you feel when you scuff across a carpeted floor in your socks and then touch a metal object. Another example would be when you pull your clothes out of the clothes dryer during the wintertime and they have “static cling”. The resulting shock startles you, but isn’t painful.

When used properly, along with consistent training, static correction bark collars can be an effective, harmless tool to stop excessive or annoying barking.

Which bark control collar works best?

The answer to this question lies with you, and your dog of course. As a dog owner, you know your pet best. Some things to think about when shopping for a no bark collar:

  • Your dog’s age: Bark collars or dog training collars should not be used on a dog younger than 6 months of age.
  • Your dog’s size & weight: Your dog’s weight and neck size should be considered when considering collars. A bark collar for little dogs won’t work well for a large or stubborn breed.
  • Your dog’s temperament: Is your dog extremely difficult to train? Apprehensive and  timid? There are specialized bark collars that will work for either extreme, as well as standard collars that will work with most dogs. A very shy dog may respond better to a Citronella Bark Collar or Ultrasonic device. Likewise, a larger dog will generally respond better to a bark control collar specifically made for large breeds.

Will a bark collar work on my dog?

The success rate with bark collars is high, but its important to keep in mind that bark devices may not help in each circumstance. A good way to help promote success is to commit yourself to consistent training. Choose the bark control collar that conforms best with your dog’s temperament and size, apply persistent training, and you will be well on your way to bark free days.
