A Reader Asks…

My dogs like to run along when I ride my bike. I also have a puppy who loves to go to the park (not the dog park). She loves to slide down the toddler slides and will do it over and over and over (obviously you have to be careful of children and your pup leaping off the top of the slide so only use the littlest kids slide). They also love digging in the sand, so I usually bring a handful of treats and bury them for the dogs to find. So when we put these exercises together I come home with a very tired group of dogs.
I’ve can also get my dogs to go on scavenger hunts with me. I put them in their kennels and “trail” a treat (drag it along the floor) to a hiding spot somewhere in the house. I let them out and watch the race to the treat. Once they get good at the indoor search, we go outside and play the game in the yard, so they can really get some running around exercise. When they are able to find the treat I replace it with a few pieces of kibble. I still have to drag the treat to leave a scent trail, but placing the kibble in the hiding spot instead of a treat still gives them a reward, without me worrying about over-treating them. After some practice my pups can find a piece of kibble hidden in our back yard within minutes.
You just have to figure out what’s the most fun for you. You’re dog is going to enjoy spending time with you. You’re going to become dedicated and continue if it’s something that you really enjoy.

A Reader Asks…

I have a 6 month old boxer/mastiff mix who stays indoors with me most of the time right now. I walk him for 3 miles a day (usually one walk but sometimes two trips of 1.5 miles each), and at night he usually needs to go out and play for 20mins-1hour (we usually play fetch or a football type game).
How much activity does he need at this age and how much will he need as he grows? I bought an invisible fence and am going to install it this weekend and work on training him to stay in the backyard…I’m unsure about how large of a space I want to give him (theres about a half acre of space available but I want him to have a portion of it to himself where he can run around and play in the grass without messing up the garden or anything). What is the smallest amount of space he would need? I’m just gonna let him out in the yard during the day so he doesn’t get bored…his activity schedule probably won’t change (playing/walking daily) and he will be inside after dark.

There is nothing Judge loves more than to be on the hunt… butt on the ground, ears high up and tense, eyes focused on the hill on the backyard through the glass in our back door. Then when he sees a rabbit, he gets up and bays hoping some of us will be dumb enough to let him go (which sadly happens all too often). If he gets out then he ALWAYS has to run into a particular neighbor’s yard while I get my shoes and his leash, if he stays in well… our door is starting to look less and less like a door.
So how about your dog?

We’re in the market for a puppy and need some advice.
We want a dog that meets most, if not all, of these traits:
* Good with kids
* Good with a cat (5 years old)
* Low activity level (indoor only for right now… will exercise at least once a day outside)
* Low-Med shedding
* Little to no barking
* Easy to train
* Loyal
* Responds when they’re name is called
We really want to get a lab but it’s a bit too big for our current condo we live in. It seems like it would be the best dog for us but the size is an issue.
We’ve also checked into Beagles but the downside to them (from what we’ve read) is that they dig, chew on things around the house, howl loudly (especially if left alone… not ideal for a condo), and they probably won’t come if they’re called while their nose is sniffing something (really because I problem because I’ve heard they can never be outside if they’re not on a leash).
Do you guys/gals have any recommendations on a breed we can check into?

With multiple dogs in our household, play time gets rather rowdy….
We try to contain the play time for their yard time, but they seem to prefer the living room for wrestling and the yard for fetch, chase and ‘hide and seek’.
Out of all the play they do, both together and alone with ‘us’, tug seems to be the overall favorites! What about your dog?
