Applying Ear Medication

When applying ear medication to your pet, try to follow these steps:

• Get the medication in your hand and take off the cap before restraining your pet

• Hold your pet’s head still with one of your hands and position it in a way that allows you to hold the pet’s ear out

• Administer the medication with your free hand by placing the container right inside the ear opening, being careful not to push it all the way into the canal

• Delver the medication to the opening of the ear

• After removing the medicine container, rub the base of your pet’s ear gently so the medication can get distributed deep inside your pet’s ear

Applying Eye Medication

Applying eye medication can also be a fairly simple procedure if you follow the right steps. Simply follow these steps:

• Have someone hold your pet’s front legs down while also holding its chest. With a smaller dog, you might be successful with wrapping it inside a towel or blanket.

• Take off the lid of the medication and hold it in your dominant hand

• If the right eye needs medication and you are right handed, place your right hand at the top of your pet’s head near the inner part of its eye.

• Lift your left hand and place your thumb in the area near the lower eyelid

• Place your forefinger near your pet’s upper eyelid

• If the left eye needs medication and you are right handed, stand to the right of your pet while facing the same direction as your pet.

• Place the medication in your right hand and rest the hand on the top of your pet’s head

• Reach across your pet and place your index finger from your left hand near your pet’s lower eyelid

• Place your left thumb near your pet’s upper eyelid

• Spread your pet’s eyelids apart with your forefinger and thumb

• Apply the medication to the small gap located between your pet’s lower eyelid and the surface of its eye or apply it directly to the surface of your pet’s eye, but do not touch the surface with the medication container

• Open and close your pet’s eye with your thumb and forefinger a couple times to help spread the medication around

Applying medication to your pet’s ears and eyes can be a bit frightening. While it may take a bit of practice to get the technique down, it is actually simpler than you might think!
