That is good that you don’t want your dog to escape, one great collar that I have discovered after using choke collars without being able to train my dog is a gentle leader it prevents pulling because it makes the dog’s head turns sideways when they pull instead of tightening so they can’t go forward much. If your dog already heels and the collar is just to have an extra strong collar that works though.
My problem is that my Irish Setter, if he gets off his leash (he broke his collar a while back) is gone…he loves to run, and it doesn’t matter if I chase him or not…does anyone have any real suggestions on how to train him not to bolt when he’s off-leash? For his safety and well-being, any suggestions are welcome!
I agree. Don’t chase your dog! We had a german shepard that loved to play the run away game. He thought it was a lot of fun. Once we stopped chasing him, the game was over. We would just go home, open the gate, place a big bucket of fresh water by the door, and within ten minutes he was home. Eventually he stopped the run away game.
Loads of people say it doesn’t work, but I usually find that these people don’t practise it the right way. I don’t even look at Elly when I walk away. It was either… get her to follow me, or lose her, and I certainly didn’t want to lose her! If an owner gets the dog to stay with them while walking of the lead or leash, then it solves all sorts of problems in the future like running away from home and running off if the leash gets accidentally dropped or broken.
I have this problem with a friends dog. When i clip him off the leash he will surely just run away but i a not sure if hes already dependent on me enough or if he would just walk away lol. So i reather chase him. Better then if he gets hit by a car or lose. maybe after some time. Althoug its reather stupid to train a dog which you have just temporary. My friend dont have time to train him though :-/ .. guesse i need to get my own dog and take care of him myself

I used it on a chihuahua and a dachshund. Worked just fine for me.

This technique worked great for my basenji.
Please don’t use a choke collar, in my experience they are uncomfortable, dangerous and they teach a dog absolutely nothing!
