I fill the bottom of empty fizzy bottles with rice and bright coloured beads etc, and if you squeeze a little air out before you put the lid back on it gives an area where the dog can chew and hold it! Also a good thing is Carrots dogs like to throw them around and when exhausted they will eat them and this is good for them and thier coats! I hope this helps and dont feel guilty i am sure your dog has a whale of a time once you have left!!! They are better than children at pulling those heart strings!!!!
i work at STATE LINE PET SUPPLY and we have a whole section just of “DOGGY PUZZLES”. not just the Kongs.
You can get a spray from the pet shop especially for kongs, I think it is like a liver pate in a can, I also give my dog dried sausage rolls and raw hide chews.
I like the Busy Buddy twist toy. Like a Kong, you put small treats inside. My dog rolls it around like a ball for the treats to fall out. You can adjust the difficulty so it may take a short time or a long time for the dog to get at the treat. Since it’s different then the Kong, your dog might like it, too. I bought mine at dog.com, but I’ve also seen it in some pet stores.
The company that makes Kongs actually sells biscuits that are shaped to fit inside the kong. My dogs love them, and they last a lot longer than peanut butter.
Everyone else already gave you some good ideas (except that person above me who suggested locking your dog up in the bathroom and tying him up…) but I wanted to add one more:
I’ve seen these cool toys that are balls that you can put treats in, and they also let you record your voice on them, so when your dog moves it, it plays the recording. You can change the message daily if you want. I thought that was cute!
Another idea – how about hiding small cookies around the house, behind furniture, under the table, etc. Put them in different spots every day – it’ll give your dog something to ‘hunt’ for.

You can get a product made by kong called ‘stuff n paste’, it comes in different flavours. I sometimes use chicken flavour sandwich paste for my dog!
When I stuff a kong for him I sometimes put a rawhide chew in the smaller end of the toy aswell, he loves it!!
You can get activity balls aswell that you put dry mixer into and then when the dog rolls the ball treats fall out.
Kong also do another toy called a biscuit ball, they are quite pricey but well worth it!!

Also, leave a TV on when you are not home.
There is a toy that is a ball and when the dog rolls it around it drops out treats. My dogs love them. Sorry but, they have played with it for so long the name is worn off. I found it at Pet Smart. You can buy the treats they recommend but they are pricey. I just buy small bites dog food it works just as well and costs a lot less. It really helped with separation anxiety.

I’ve got two affens, and when we used to have just the first one, we’d leave him with the following:
His kong – each day we changed the treat, cream cheese one day, peanut butter, mashed potato etc.
A chicken wing or thigh – raw – contrary to belief raw chicken bones are fine as they are soft and don; splinter. We’d give him this just as we left, it acted as a distraction and he’d be more interested in ripping flesh off than us leaving.
We’d leave the kitchen stereo on (use repeat function for Cd’s) to give him noise that is similar to when we are there.
His favourite toys – soft kids toys that squeak – he’d play for hours with them.
Dogs, apparently don’t have much perception of time, so if you went out for five hours, or five minutes, they’d respond in the same way.

i recently bought my yorkie a cube it is square with a little hole in the top where you can put dry food in. if i ever have to go out i leave the telly on i also bought my yorkie a kong put some dry food in those little bicuits or you could try some minni bites .
a Kong is one of the best ideas, also you can get balls called Borden breakers, i also have a couple of these for my dog.
you can get them in various sizes and aren’t expensive, you fill them through a Little slide open/closed hole in the top of it and i fill mine with mixer, then only half shut the hole, and as the dog plays with the ball bits if mixer drop out of it.

there are treat balls that you can record your voice; there are everlasting treat balls, I place other little treats inside the big treat ; there are puzzle toys for dogs and I also place treats in there as well; rotate the toys to avoid them getting bored; if your dog isn’t destructive; I hide treats in places and in things; leave a comfy place for him to rest; exercise him before you go; good luck

When my dog was a pup I went to the butcher who cut a beef shank bone in half for me. I took it home and boiled it down until it was clean. If you put a thick chunk of cheddar cheese way down in the middle of the bone it will keep your dog busy for hours trying to get it out. I call it “Nintendo for Dogs.” My dog is now 8-years old and still has the same bone. You can also get a similar hollow-bone from retail stores. I also received a good piece of advice that your comings and goings are a normal part of life … if you make a huge deal of it the dog will eventually get separation anxiety and develop unwanted habits (chewing, etc). Get one of those dog bones, the really hard ones. ITs lamb i think, but it will take him weeks to finish it. Or take him for a big walk beofre you leave, put some food down and make a run from the guilt. I know its hard aint it, but you gotta go work hon!!
Get another dog it is kinder,they are company for each other ,a dog does not play with a toy when he is on his own !
Depends on the dog! I used to have a hyper jack russell who loved tearing things up. A squeaky toy would last all of 6 seconds.
I used to leave Radio 4 on, its usually soothing voices.
Put dog biscuits in brown paper bags, screw them up and leave them around the floor. Stuff them in the inner tubes of toilet rolls. Hide some under or in cardboard boxes.
An activity ball that has a hole in it that drops out biscuits when they roll it around.
A giant rawhide chew.
One of those rock hard giant dog biscuits meant for big dogs.
A chair so he could look out the window and yap at people, cats, dogs, anything. (But not near enough to jump out of the window, I once had to help a JR that had crashed through the glass in a front door.)
Torn up paper is easy to clean up.
If your dog is the chewing type, get him hard toys (balls, sticks, different models). If he isn’t that type, you could also give him squeaky toys, so that he doesn’t feel alone, as animals like being talked to.
i give my dogs a hard nylabone and other hard chew toys you can find some really good stuff in pet shops.with kongs you can buy the kong fillers in diffrent flavours from pet shops also,i use cheese slices as they stick around the edges and make it more difficult for the dog to get out.
get him a nice squeaking toy so he can talk with it!
you could try leaving some music on for him and maybe getting him a cuddly toy that he could cuddle up with, or maybe get another dog for company for him . have a word with your vet and give him a cuddle from me. good luck

I do it for my bird all the time. He seems to be ok with it.
Sofas, junk mail and socks!
Lock him in the bathroom tied up, then with the new stop watch you bought for him he can time himself on how long it took for him to get loose.
